Always interesting to follow the etymology.

The gnu manifesto hit in 84/85 and I remember reading it and thinking "ambitious" but the thing is, we had the DECUS tapes. Sharing code had been routine amongst pdp11, dec10 and vax users since the 1970s.

I think the definition of open source is interesting but not definitive of what free software is. It's an enormously important term, but really only a flavour.
